Buffon included in Italy squad despite retirement :

Gianluigi Buffon is set to go back on his decision to retire from international football, having made Italy’s squad for friendlies against Argentina and England.

The 40-year-old called time on his Azzurri career after they failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. However, he has since backtracked after holding a meeting with interim national team coach Luigi Di Biagio in February.

The Juventus keeper now looks set to complete a sensational u-turn after being called up to travel for games on 23 and 27 March. Italy will face Argentina at the Etihad Stadium before a clash with England at Wembley.

Buffon is the most-capped European international footballer of all-time, having played 175 games for Italy. He lies nine behind former Egyptian international Ahmed Hassan’s global record of 184.

The peak of his international career came when Italy won the 2006 World Cup in Germany, defeating France in a penalty shootout in the final. However, failure to qualify for this year’s showpiece in Russia has arguably been the lowest point.
